High Pressure Oil Rig (HiPOR™)

The mechanisms of deposition from the crude to heat transfer surfaces remain largely poorly understood. With the aim of improving the understanding of crude oil fouling at industrial conditions, the High Pressure Oil Rig (HiPOR™) has been designed to produce fouling deposits at refinery conditions. HiPOR™ has been designed and built at Imperial College London and exclusively licensed to Hexxcell.

Fouling at industrial conditions

HiPOR™ features two main test sections, each 2 m long, namely a tubular and an annulus flow section where crude is passed at industrial relevant conditions (i.e. up to 300 °C and 30 bar). Whilst the tubular section provides data on the same geometry found in refinery heat exchangers, the annulus sections allows for precise measurements of temperature profiles along the axial direction and easy access to the fouling deposits for subsequent (off-line) characterization. For a precise control of test conditions, Joule heating is used to supply the necessary heat flux to the crude in the test sections. The rig is fully equipped to measure relevant parameters such as temperatures, pressure drop, flow rates and Joule heating power supplied.
